Libratone Live Design Competition

The competition brief calls for a design for the lid of the speaker.

The design draws inspiration from two things :

Sound Waves : Sound waves are represented by a set of curves that are spaced out with varying density. The density revolves around the center of the cover plate representing the origin. The varying density also relates to the properties of sound waves, 'Wave and Amplitute’. The end design also adds an effect of three dimensionality to the flat cover plate when viewed from an angle.

Record Discs : These were one of the earliest sound storage devices. Perhaps where we started collecting music. The design abstracts almost the literal form of the record disc by morphing it into a triangular domain. The notion of the spinning record disc is captured by the varying density curves.

The perimeter of the cover plate is accentuated by specific colours. This will help to relate different colours the speakers are available in. The varying density curves or groove lines can be achieved through simple process of scoring through digital prototyping.

I am always intrigued with the idea of continuity or extension. The evolution of this design came about first with the display shelves and how it should be presented. This is answered by simple shelves, accentuated with colour here and there. Colour here corresponds to the seven colours that white light is composed of. These colours are seen as the basic shades that results in the spectrum of colours that are seen on Indian Fabric. The geometry around this is resulted of the function that they have to cater to. The concept of continuity helped in linking these functions in to a single geometrical movement that operates around the display shelf.

Project : Pedestrian Bridge, Tellicherry - Kerala, India

Span : 60 meter

Client : State Government of Kerala

Description : The horizontal link between the two land masses is seen as flow lines abstracting the circulation movement. These flow lines originates from the contours of the landmass and then transforms in to the sectional profile of the design intend. To exploit the view inherited from the site, a viewing deck has been incorporated on the bridge itself. The flow lines adapts to this condition by modifying its vector information. The support system is considered as a host to the flow line and is made to weave the horizontal fabric. The weaving would help in taking load in compression as well as lateral loads arising from coastal winds.

Sectional studies to understand the datum dynamism in relation to the deployment of the structure. Also explores how to transform a natural sectional phenomenon of fresh water meeting the salt water into a planar aspect

Some parallels to what we are proposing..

What are we proposing ?

A hydro-dynamic landscape - An Aqua Park -Series of experiential spaces based on the external agencies that comes into play in the transitional zone - Coastline

The river mouth at the Thames estuary is zeroed down as our site. There are more agencies that come into play in this zone than anywhere else on the upstream of the river. Agencies that we are interested in are : Salt and fresh water mixing : Sand and other minerals deposition : Tide levels and Waves. Salt and fresh water brings in two different worlds of ecologies with it. The design interest would be to support and thrive these ecologies simultaneously.

The deployment of the L-system on to the site will be based on the contour levels. The contour line best suited for access to the structure is selected, on to which points are deployed on equal intervals. These points will act as seeds and initiate the L-system. The branching of the L-system is further controlled by density, meanwhile the strings have specific instruction when they come in to the activation zone. The activation zone represented by circles corresponds to density of people to be accommodated in that zone.

The context that the studio is looking at is the coastline which is an edge condition where different forces or agencies come in to play at different levels. Such as surface winds, waves, currents, sedimentation, salinity etc. The coastline is a very dynamic phenomena. Its attributes keeps changing according to the external agency at play. What is critical here is the land mass which is some cases are disappearing due to the rising sea level or in other cases are extended due to the formation of sand bars and mud flats. what we are interested in is the topography of the land mass which is a direct result of these agencies. Forces like the earth techtonics, climate act at the global scale and at the micro scale chemical and biological agencies are more prominent. With the employment of L-system along with other algorithmic systems such as sub division, Koch, Quadtree and Octree, we are looking to design a Artificial Landscape structure.

We brought two algorithmic systems together in a symbiotic relationship. First system is the L-Systems and the second one being Octree. However to understand the octree better we started with quadtree which basically works on dividing each cell into four parts. The Octree consists of eight subdivision and is achieved in the three dimensional environment. As our first step, we just did a simple overlay of these systems and tried extracting information out of it.

L - System Iteration = 25 : Octree Iteration = 7

The following catalogues came out of simple explorations of what the symbiotic systems can offer. It lead to the idea that perhaps the quadtree or octree can be a field by itself through which the L-sytem an grow, thereby altering the packing. The cells were also modified in t various other profiles

L- System - Koch Curve. After looking at some of the conventional Koch system, we looked how these definite rules can lead to asymmetry. The conventional Koch (Snow Flake) was extended in to the three dimensional environment.

The limitation of the Koch Curve is that it does not grow beyond what the first generation offers. We are looking at possibilities of varying the rule for every generation so that the Koch Curve can grow.

The series of L-system catalogues are the ones that were generated as a part of our experimentation. We are looking at what the l-systems are capable of by varying various factors like Initiator-Generator rules, their geometry, as well as angles. These diagrams are two dimensional.

The last catalogue suggest a possibility of agents using the L-system logics to maneuver in a particular field condition.

This is one of our first experimentation with L-systems in processing. What we see here is complexity building up and how each of these vary from each other just by changing the iterations. The script generates about more than five family of patterns.
